Sumycin – broad spectrum antibiotic
Sumycin is a tetracycline antibiotic and is used to treat infections produced by bacteria belonging to the Streptomyces genus. The drug is common in the treatment of acne and rosacea. Historically the drug has been responsible in decreasing the incidence of cholera deaths across the world.
Tetracycline is marketed under the brand name sumycin, Panmycin, Tetracyn etc. The drug has been approved by the FDA and works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Tetracycline were for the first time discovered by Benjamin Minge Duggar in the year 1945 and was for the first time prescribed for bacterial infections in the year 1948. It was first prepared and marketed by Laderle labs in the year 1945. The drug is available as oral pills in the concentration of 250 and 500 mg and as 125 mg/5ml oral suspension.
How to use Sumycin:
Tetracycline works well if taken in an empty stomach with water at least one hour after meals. The drug is not indicated for use before bedtime and is not to be clubbed with drugs or products that contain aluminium, calcium and magnesium. Sumycin should not be clubbed with quinapril, antacids, sucralfate and vitamin supplements.
Dairy products such as milk and yogurt could bind with tetracycline, decreasing its rate of absorption. Antibiotics works best when the right dosage of the drug is maintained in the blood. It is important to maintain constant doses which are calculated based on the person’s weight and extend of disease condition. It is important to complete the entire course of the drug and to be stored at a temperature below 30 C.
Contraindications and precautions:
Sumycin is not indicated for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant as tetracycline could harm the unborn baby. People who could develop allergies towards the medicine components and with known history of kidney and stomach problems should inform the doctor before being prescribed with sumycin.
Drugs such as anti-coagulants, contraceptives, penicillin’s, acitretin would decrease the efficacy of Sumycin and should not be used without medical advice. It is not advisable to change the dosage of the medicine or to stop using the drug without advice from the physician.
