Macrobid: Medical Facts You Should Know About This Antibiotic Drug
The main composition of this drug is Nitrofurantoin. This drug is mostly indicated in cases of urinary tract infections. Most often it is used against a bacterium called Escherichia coli. It comes in a gelatinized hard capsule with crystals of the drug inside.
What is Macrobid?
It is an antibiotic with Macrobid as the trade name and nitrofurantoin as the generic name. It is bactericidal in function which means it can kill bacteria.
What is it used for?
Macrobid is indicated in:
• Urinary tract infections
• Infections occurring in the urinary bladder for example acute cystitis
• Hospital acquired infections due to klebsiella species
• Against staphylococcal infections
• Urinary catheter infection
• In cases where the person is resistant to other antibiotics, nitrofurantoin can be given
How should you use it?
It should always be taken after a meal because this increases its absorption in the body hence making it more effective.
The dose regimen varies with age and condition of the patient.
The average adult dosage for treating a urinary tract infection is: 100mg taken 2 times a day or 50 mg taken 4 times a day for 7 days.
In case of children the dose is: 1-2mg / kg body weight given 4 times per day or can even be given in form of syrups especially available for pediatric population.
Antacids are mostly not taken unless your physician has prescribed them.
The drug is a pregnancy category B that means it is believed to be not harmful to the unborn baby but it should not be taken in the last 2 - 4 weeks of pregnancy.
Medication should not be discontinued without completing the course as it may lead to resistance at a later date.
The medicine should properly be kept in a cool place away from sunlight between 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Contraindications and precautions:
Nitrofurantoin is absolutely contraindicated in a person with deficiency of glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase as it can lead to hemolytic anemia.
Should not be taken in late stages of pregnancy and nursing mothers should completely avoid it as it can be passed through milk to the infant causing harmful effects.
It should not be taken in a combination with any antibiotic of quinolone group as they can cause a bad reaction hence you should report to your physician if you are taking any other antibiotics.
Since nitrofurantoin is excreted in urine, any conditions like renal impairment must be mentioned to the physician.
Macrobid should not be administered in cases where a systemic disease is present because it has a very poor tissue penetration compared to other antibiotics. It should be avoided taken on an empty stomach.
