What Is Allegra?
Allegra is a drug that belongs to the antihistamine family. It sold under the brand name Allegra ODT; its generic name is Fexofenadine. Other brand names of this drug are Fexofenadine, Fexidine, Telfast, Fastofen among others.
Histamines are recognized as the agents who produce sneezing, itching, watery eyes in the body. Hence, these antihistamines are responsible for treating the symptoms caused by allergies in humans. Allegra is most commonly used for treating skin itching hives. Allegra should be stored away from moisture and heat.
What It Is Used For And How It Is Used?
Use Allegra strictly as per your doctor’s advice and/ or the directions on the label.
Allegra comes in two forms: tablet and liquid. You may take the tablet with a glass of water. When you take the drug in liquid form, ensure that measure the dosage accurately using the measuring cup that is sold along with it.
Be aware that Allegra tablet is dispersible and hence, it may crumble if handled with wet hands . Do not chew the tablet; it should be taken as prescribed, i.e. drink it as it dissolves.
The tablet (ODT) needs to be taken on empty stomach at least one hour before the meals.
Precautions And Contraindications For Allegra
1) Consult your doctor and inform if you are taking any type of sedatives, sleeping pills or medicines for depression. Allegra can cause acute sleepiness.
2) Antacids make it harder for the body to absorb Allegra; hence, do not take antacids when you are on treatment with Allegra.
3) Allegra should be taken ONLY with water. No fruit juices (apple, orange or grape) should be used.
4) Inform your doctor if you suffer from any type of allergy before you are prescribed this medication, since Allegra may combine to cause very serious health conditions, and even death.
Side Effects
There are a number of side effects that may be experienced when taking Allegra. Among the mild side-effects caused by Allegra are difficulty in breathing or labored breathing, shortness of breath, swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat. You may also experience nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, drowsiness, tired feeling, headache, muscle pain, back pain and menstrual cramps. Fever, chills and other flu symptoms may also occur. Overdose may cause dizziness or dry mouth.
Some of the rare and very serious side effects are chest tightness, feeling of warmth, redness of face, neck and arms, nervousness, sleeplessness, terrifying dreams, troubled sleep etc.
